A Proud Canadian
I am a proud Canadian…. and recently I became even more proud to be a Canadian. You see, Canada LOST (yes I said LOST) a vote to have a two-year seat on the United Nations Security Council.
As we have said before in these Commentaries, the UN is a corrupt and dysfunctional organization that has not lived up to its idealistic expectations. And it’s not going to clean house or change its ways any time soon.
So why am I proud that my country lost this vote? Well, the way I see it, if Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez and Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and Libya’s Moammar Gaddafi and many others like them, did not vote for Canada - then Canada MUST be doing something right on the world stage.
If these nations want to keep Canada OFF the Security Council it is because they don’t like the positions my country takes…. and that suits me to a tee. I’m okay having certain voting blocs unhappy with us because it’s clear that we have a country that doesn’t readily sell out its principles and those of its citizens for convenience. A country that doesn’t follow a policy of appeasement, like so many nations do.
To quote Eleanor Roosevelt. “When you have decided what you believe what you feel must be done, have the courage to stand alone and be counted.” My country has displayed this courage. Well done Canada.
Our Prime Minister may be embarrassed that Canada’s bid for the seat failed, but I’m not. I’m proud that we’ve stood by our guns strongly enough that brutes like Chavez and Ahmadinejad don’t want us in the Security Council playground.
The only thing that could make me even more proud to be Canadian, would be if the Canadian government cut off our funding of the sham called the “United Nations”.
