Age of Terrorism – 2009-01-05

Well here we are with 2009 approaching.

We entered the 21st Century with so much optimism -- didn’t we? After all the 20th Century saw the defeat of the Nazi drive to rule the world after the death of more than 20 million people. We saw détente with China, the fall of the Communist Empire, and the end of the Cold War.

It seemed that we were going to enter a century of reason, enlightenment, globalization and democracy. European nations, many of them historical enemies, formed an economic union. Amazingly, former members of the Warsaw Pact were now becoming members of Nato.

The world appeared to be changing – and changing for the better.

But the dream did not last. It was shattered as airplanes were intentionally flown into office buildings killing thousands of non-combatants. We saw young men and women strapping bombs and guns to themselves and attacking trains in Spain, the subway system in the UK, and tourists in Bali and Mumbai.. This is only a few of the thousands of terrorist acts that have taken place in this Century.

Instead of an age of enlightenment we appear to have entered an age of terrorism. Instead of confrontation between soldiers on the battlefield we began the era of non-uniformed suicide bombers killing and maiming indiscriminately.

What we are left with is a time of hope. Hope that the next decade will be much better that this decade has been to date.
