Donald Trump As President
In 1960 America elected its first Catholic President in John F. Kennedy. In 2008 America elected its first person of color as President. But is America ready for Donald Trump as President? I think not.
Oh don’t get me wrong. I like what the Donald is saying. He is speaking like a businessman who understands that America is in decline and that its policies toward China are a major cause. Maybe it is time that someone said “You’re fired” to all those economists and bureaucrats who have been advising past Presidents and have lead America to the brink of economic disaster.
Yes the Donald makes a lot of sense. But in politics it is image that matters more than policies. And the Donald’s image is more of an egomaniac and showman than President.
His unique hairstyle is the butt of jokes on daytime and every late night talkshow in America. He is on his third wife and has an unusual penchant for truly gaudy furnishing. Visiting his apartment is like stepping into the palace at Versailles in Louis the Fourteenth’s time. Americans, I suspect, do not want that type of taste (or lack thereof) brought to the White House.
An American President must convey the image of Presidential stature and morality. The President is the head of state and its representative to the world. The Donald’s association with gambling casinos; the fact that The Trump organization produces a slew of beauty pageants including Miss Universe, Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA PLUS his multiple marriages take a shine off the required Presidential image. His name is on everything from Shirts and Ties to mattresses. Not exactly a persona one wants alongside Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln.
So is the Donald foolish enough to believe he has a real shot at the White House. I give him more credit than that. Donald Trump is a showman and I believe his supposed run for the Presidency is just a way to get him on more talk shows and enhance the “Trump” image and the Trump Organization.
But perhaps I speak to soon. While I cannot see the Donald as President, …. Vice President? Well that’s another matter.
Now that Celebrity Apprentice is running out of third string celebrities, the Donald and America might be ready for a change. If Spiro Agnew, Dan Quayle and Dick Cheney could get the Vice Presidential nomination, The Donald is starting to look damn good to me.
