DURBAN 2 - 2009-05-04

It is encouraging to see that the world is seeking to eradicate racism and intolerance. That is why the recent United Nations World Conference Against Racism, generally called Durban 2 should, in my opinion, have been called Hypocrisy 2.

This Conference appeared to be less about wiping out racism and more about diverting it’s ugly face by attending a conference that is stated to be "against racism".

Racism is intolerance and injustice based on race. But it is no less or greater an evil than intolerance and injustice based on any other criteria such as sex, creed, or sexual orientation. Yet those who spoke the loudest and were the most accusatory at Durban 2 are amongst the most oppressive and intolerant nations in the world.

How many of these countries treat their women like chattels, and imprison or execute homosexuals? AH, you say, these are cultural differences and perhaps fundamental to their religious beliefs. I grant you that.

So how many tolerate free speech? How many do not imprison or assassinate the political opposition? How many recognize and adhere to the due process and the rule of law?

In how many of these countries, would you as a tourist, feel safe from the authorities if you were charged with a crime. Would you be considered innocent until proven guilty? Would you receive a fair and expeditious trial?

If you see my point -- you understand why I say Durban 2 should have been called Hypocrisy 2.

I applaud those countries, like Canada the United States, and many, many others, that made it clear they would not attend the Conference.

We should be critical of racism, cruelty and injustice. But Durban 2 appears to be a clear case of the pot calling the kettle black...and a further diminishment of the usefulness and credibility of the United Nations.
