Herman Cain
I'm a bit of a political junkie, and right now you can bet I've got my eye on the upcoming US Presidential race. And in my opinion, there's one man who could make this race REALLY interesting. That man is Herman Cain. Maybe you've never heard of Herman Cain, or only know a little bit about him. But I'm pretty sure you'll hear more on him in the coming weeks.
Herman Cain is a self-made multi-millionaire businessman. He's the former CEO of Godfather's Pizza, and served as Chairman of the Federal Reserve bank of Kansas City, chairman of the National Restaurant Association, and sits on the Board of Directors of some pretty well-known companies. At one point in his career, he took his region's stores from least profitable in the country to MOST profitable, in just three years. This is a smart, hard-working guy who knows how to get results.
He's popular with the Tea Party, has excellent business contacts and experience, and is a devout Baptist associate minister who is opposed to abortion under any circumstances. In other words, he is a textbook Conservative with beliefs that line up with the "moral majority" wing of the Republican party. While many things can go wrong between now and the Republican National Convention - remember Ross Perot anyone? - right now, I'd say that Herman Cain may well be the Republican party's best chance of defeating Barack Obama. Because in addition to everything else, Herman Cain is also a black man.
Some political pundits say that Herman Cain doesn't have a chance at the Republican nomination, because he has little political experience, he certainly lacks political polish, and isn't one of the old-boys' network in the Party. And that some among the Republican grass roots might have issues about being represented by a black man. But the Republicans are doing badly in the polls and trying to defeat a popular incumbent President.
I think there are smart people in the party who recognize that a black candidate - who is an exciting candidate regardless of race - could make the difference for them. He could draw votes from black Americans who are disillusioned with Obama and the Democrats, and voters who might otherwise be on the fence. His perceived liabilities seem to be far outweighed by his benefits.
I predict that Herman Cain will be on the Republican slate come the next Presidential election. I can't say yet whether as the Presidential or Vice-Presidential candidate, but either way, he definitely gives the Republicans an excellent chance at leading the country. So now, we watch and wait.
