We Need Better Justice -
"Justice Must Not Only BE Done, but Must be Seen to BE Done"
This is a very important maxim. However, for most of us, it has lost its value. We do not see much justice anymore, at least when it is the rich and affluent that are standing before the Court.
Take the case of Bernard Madoff. Mr. Madoff lived like a Prince for decades on money he stole from investors. He has left multiple lives, schools and Charitable foundations ravaged and even destitute.
But he though he is charged with the largest theft in history he did not spent a single day in jail before his guilty plea. Instead he was granted bail and was allowed to live in his multi-million dollar New York apartment. More importantly, once sentenced he will likely end up in a minimum security facility.
Do you SEE Justice being done here? Do you see a Deterrence Factor being displayed to discourage others from behaving similarly? I don’t.
How many of you out there would be willing to spend the next 30 years living like a prince and then have to spend the remainder of your life in a white collar prison, while you wife and children continue to live as millionaires?
So what do I suggest: bring back the pillary. No really. I am not kidding.
I believe that non-violent criminals should be treated differently from violent criminals. I don’t want taxpayers to pay to feed, clothe, house and provide medical care for criminals that do are not a physical danger to society . But I do want such criminals punished, and I want deterrence to be a substantial factor in how this is done.
Public humiliation on a daily basis is a much more effective and REAL punishment AND deterrent than being safely locked into a minimum security prison. If you don’t agree to the pillary, then how about having them walk around all day with a big sandwich board that reads "I am a Thief" (here show graphic of sandwich board).
Is this "cruel and unusal punishment". I sure hope so, because I am tired of the usual punishment.
Aren’t you?
