Karzai to join Taliban
We at Naked News have already declared that the War in Afghanistan is unwinnable. Recent events tend to support this statement the most glaring of which is Afghani President Hamid Karzai’s recent pronouncement that he might join with the Taliban.
Remember that Karzai, who was put in power with the aid of the United States and its allies, is - like most politicians desperate to maintain power … at almost any cost. And he can see clearer than you and I, what is really happening on the ground in Afghanistan.
The Americans will tell you their “Surge” is working. But apparently Mr. Karzai does not believe it. Mr. Karzai sees the writing on the wall, and is clearly hedging his bets and befriending as many sides as he can. Recently, he warmly entertained Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as well as a representative of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. Hardly the behavior of a loyal ally to the United States.
President Obama has no heart for war. The American people have no heart for this war. The Dutch contingent of troops has left. The Canadians will be leaving at the end of 2011, and the current US-led “Surge” is little more than a parting of the sea of Taliban fighters. The Taliban retreat into the hills or merge into the local population, and later will flow back when THEY want to. Even the Americans are frustrated with the Surge results.
And in a true Catch-22, the US military knows the Taliban are financed by the opium trade, but they don’t want to further antagonize the locals - who earn their living in the opium trade by burning the opium fields they capture.
We say again: this war is unwinnable. The problem at this point is that it is difficult to pull out AND save face. It was difficult in Korea. It was difficult in Viet Nam and it will be difficult in the Middle East but it will happen. And until it does, our young men and women will continue to be casualties. Not of war, but of politicians seeking an “acceptable” exit strategy. Some people express worry that if we pull out of Afghanistan, it might become a base for Islamic terrorists like Osama Bin Laden. Possible… but no-one knows where terrorism will spring from. Remember, most of the 9-11 terrorists were Saudis, and Saudi Arabia is supposedly our ally.
Nothing we do, short of outright total capitulation, will appease the radical Muslims behind so many of the last decade’s terrorist actions. So we are certainly not advocating exiting Afghanistan to placate the Muslim world. We are advocating exiting this unwinnable war because it is the right thing to do.
