What to Get Her For Xmas - 2009-12-14

I’m sure many of you men out there are well into your relationships, and the gifts of jewellery and lingerie are... not quite as regular any more. Now, you have to come up with gift ideas that aren’t as simple as telling a clerk your sweetie’s birthstone and a price range.

I’m going to give you some advice about gifts you might not have thought of, and also ones you MIGHT have.

If your spouse or girlfriend doesn’t already have one, consider a portable GPS for her car. I know, you’ve just imagined the look on her face as she opens it up and pegs it as a tech toy you "really" bought for yourself. Okay, maybe there’s a little of that. You can offer to "help" her input her favorite locations, and demonstrate how she can locate every Starbucks in a ten mile radius, you considerate fellow, you. But really, you’re saying "honey, I don’t ever want to think of you lost, and unable to find your way back to me. This little gadget will make sure you can always make your way home." In fact, write that inside the sappy card you chose for her – because you DID, of course, choose a sappy card for her, right? – to really make the point. Make sure it’s got Bluetooth, so she’ll be able to use her new GPS as a speakerphone, and she’ll even be in line with the new handsfree cell phone laws. See? It’s a gift that shows you care.

One gift she might be hinting about is one you shouldn’t spend your money on – the new e-readers that are coming onto the market, like the Kindle.

Don’t get me wrong. Digital books are a great idea. You can take your whole library with you when you travel, and we can save a lot of trees in the future.
But, right now, these are all single-purpose devices. Remember mobile phones that are only, well, phones? Now, of course, our mobiles have internet, cameras, music players, games, email… well, you get my point. You’ve probably got at least one or two old single-purpose cellphones in the back of a drawer somewhere, don’t you? Today’s e-readers are going to be just as obsolete in another couple of Christmases at most. They’ll be integrated with netbooks, certainly, so there will be one less chunk of technology to lug around. And far more bang for your buck, as well.

So, there you have it. A surprising yea, and maybe an equally suprising nay on gifts for your sweetheart. And whatever you do end up getting her, make sure to wrap it up nicely and include a mooshy card. You know… bonus points.

We’d love to hear from you about your gift-giving plans this holiday season. Have you picked out the perfect gift for the missus? What past gift has been the biggest hit for you?
